Cancer Research
As the first funder of the bone marrow transplant program at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center, the Foundation sought to make treatment services for patients diagnosed with cancer available to individuals residing in the Chicago land area. Through major grants, sophisticated equipment has been acquired and support given to capital projects at premier medical institutions.
With a desire to increase the body of knowledge and expertise in the region, endowed chairs in oncology have been established at many premier institutions. The Foundation established endowed chairs in oncology at the following institutions.
- Rush University Medical Center
The endowed chair is Dr. Henry Fung, Coleman Foundation Chair for Blood and Bone Narrow Transplantation. - Loyola University Medical Center
The endowed is Dr. Patrick Stiff, Coleman Professorship in Oncology. - University of Notre Dame
The endowed chair is Dr. Martin Tenniswood, Coleman Professor of Biological Sciences.
The Foundation supports translational research, intended to translate knowledge derived from laboratory work into clinical applications through partnerships with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Illinois Chapter, and the Leukemia Research Foundation.
To supplement the work of the endowed chair holders, the Foundation occasionally supports educational programs for cancer patients and survivors and workshops for healthcare professionals.
