Grant Recipients

On July 8, 2004, the following programs were awarded grants under the Entrepreneurship Awareness and Education Grant initiative of The Coleman Foundation in conjunction with the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Two year colleges and technical colleges were invited to present proposals for the development or expansion of entrepreneurship education.

Howard Community College, MD
The school has initiated courses in entrepreneurship and will use this grant to add a course entitled "Entrepreneurship in Practice" which will include a practicum/internship component for students.

Butler County Community College, PA
This college will develop a Diploma in Entrepreneurship which is designed to be an "add-on" to another degree, or to take advantage of a large body of life experience that may make someone a good candidate to own his/her own auto repair, flower shop, home shopping service, cleaning service, etc. This project is designed to help individuals to learn how to turn content-specific knowledge into a viable self-employment opportunity.

Kingsborough Community College, NY
A business simulation program called "Virtual Enterprise" is currently in use in several departments and programs at KCC. With this grant the necessary modules and changes will be added to the simulation to make it useful as a teaching tool for entrepreneurship.

Sinclair Community College, OH
This project will develop an Associate of Science Degree in Entrepreneurship and a certificate program in entrepreneurship. As part of the grant they will conduct some benchmarking with two other community colleges that have established entrepreneurship programs.

North Iowa Area Community College, IA
As a way to reach virtually all students, faculty will be trained to include entrepreneurship as a topic in the required Communications 101 (speech) class that all degree-seeking students must take.

Springfield Technical Community College, MA
As an expansion of the entrepreneurship curriculum, this grant will facilitate faculty training and development of entrepreneurship components in 10 courses across the campus in a variety of subject areas.

Butte Community College, CA
This school proposes to advance entrepreneurship education through a four-pronged approach: a) retooling the existing entrepreneurship program; b) collaborating with local economic development entities; c) developing a K-12 entrepreneurial immersion program; and d) hosting an annual business plan competition.

Montgomery College, MD
This funding is intended to support the development of an experiential learning program in entrepreneurship offered through the Macklin Center for Entrepreneurship. Students will be paired with successful entrepreneurs and participate in internships at start-up businesses. The program targets all students, but will be specifically promoted to students in the biosciences and the arts.

Lorain County Community College, OH
The project concept is to develop an entrepreneurship program. The courses in the program will be geared towards concerns of the entrepreneur including entrepreneurial finance instead of corporate finance, entrepreneurial marketing instead of marketing, entrepreneurial management instead of traditional management, and New Venture Creations will create business plans. All the coursework will be paired with real life experiences in the GLIDE incubator companies.

Mount Wachusett Community College, MA
This project is to develop the "Entrepreneurial Resource Center" which will assist existing small businesses, and also assist in the creation of small businesses in improving their performance skill development. The Resource Center will provide access to technology and resources for entrepreneurs.
